Critical Analysis of Body Cameras
This community resource guide I made for LIS 762: Critical Race Information Theory - Power of the Capture Moment fulfills Learning Outcome 4b. In this essay, I briefly describe surveillance and argue that body cameras worn by police are tools of state surveillance, whereas recordings of police by the public do not count as surveillance. I address why some advocate for body cameras on behalf of communities who regularly are targeted by police violence, and I also address why, ultimately, this technology does not serve their justice-oriented goals.
