Addressing the Literacy Needs of Immigrant Populations
This essay I wrote for LIS 701: Core Values, Ethics, and Issues of the Library Information Professions fulfills Learning Outcome 1a. I outlined the history of how American libraries have served non-English speaking immigrant patrons. The shift from "Americanization" efforts to offering collections and services in different languages shows a shift in the goals and ethics of the profession from, as I put it in the paper, "condescension to collaboration."
